BATTLE OF THE BIDGEE A WEEKEND OF COMPETITION AND COUNTRY HOSPITALITY

Friday, 2 October 2026
Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is encouraging locals to get behind this year’s Battle of the Bidgee Stockman’s Challenge, with the popular event ready to deliver a fantastic weekend of heritage and friendly rivalry.

The annual event brings communities from across the Murrumbidgee region together through horsemanship, stock handling and traditional bush skills in a huge weekend of competition on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in Gundagai.
“Battle of the Bidgee is more than a competition; it’s an opportunity for some of the best horsemen and horsewomen to come together and honour our heritage and traditions,” Ms Cooke said.
“The weekend will showcase the skills that remain such an important part of our country life.”
The Battle of the Bidgee has become a popular event on the local calendar, celebrating stockmanship, horsemanship and rural heritage as competitors take on a series of disciplines that reflect the traditions and practical skills of stockmen and stockwomen.
“Whether you’re a veteran horse enthusiast or plainly looking for a great day out, the Battle of the Bidgee offers something for everyone,” Ms Cooke said.
“Events of this scale rely heavily on the contribution of volunteers and dedicated community members.
“Their hard effort guarantees the Battle of the Bidgee continues to get bigger and better every year.”
Preliminary events include Stock Handling, Packhorse, Whip Crack, Dry Work Pattern, Bareback Obstacle, Horseshoeing, and Cross Country.
Finals day is always popular, with the top ten competitors competing fiercely in the Wild Horse Catch and Poley Buck Jump, while the top five lady competitors take on the Wild Horse Catch and Working Cow Horse events.
Junior competitors will compete in Time Trial and Steer Catch finals.
In 2026, organisers have brought back the Novice category and Striplings events to encourage younger riders to showcase their skills and experience in an encouraging environment.
“The Battle of the Bidgee not only preserves and celebrates Australian bush culture, but it also brings communities together,” Ms Cooke said.
“I encourage everyone to come along, support the competitors and enjoy a fantastic weekend celebrating the traditions that have helped shape our communities across the Cootamundra electorate.
“Battle of the Bidgee is a true showcase of country NSW at its best.”
Battle of the Bidgee will be held from Friday 9 October to Sunday 11 October at the Gundagai Rodeo Grounds.
