GUNDAGAI COOKS UP A STORM FOR R U OK DAY

Thursday, 12 September 2024

Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, has marked R U OK Day with a very special bake off in Gundagai, raising essential funds and awareness to help support mental health initiatives.

“Every day is a good day to ask ‘R U OK?’ It’s a conversation that could change a life.” Ms Cooke said.

“With such delicious treats on offer today at the R U OK bake-off, it’s the perfect opportunity to share a cuppa and a cake with a loved one during a meaningful conversation.”

Lesley Kingwill took out top honours for her unique creations, for potato chip clusters in the category of “looks gross tastes delicious” and for a potato chocolate cake, winning “weird but in a good way.” Sue Spicer’s scored for “you put what in that?!” featuring a 1932 mystery cake, made with tomato soup. Peter Hayes’ incredible sausage roll also won him an award for the “nailed it” category at the Gundagai CWA v Gundagai Men’s Shed bake-off.

All three winners were presented hand-made awards by the Gundagai Shed, and were congratulated by Ms Cooke for a hosting an unforgettable bake-off at the Gundagai Services Club.

“Today is such an important day, made all the better for good food and even better company. With quirky cakes come great conversations, and I am so proud to be part of a community that asks R U OK? every day,” Ms Cooke said.

“A huge thank you to Kim Powell from the Gundagai Country Women’s Association, and to Matt Day from the Gundagai Men’s Shed for creating a culture of mental wellbeing and support across the region. Our towns are all the better when we look out for each other.”
