Australia's rice industry has celebrated its leading innovators and achievers at the 2026 Rice Industry Awards in Barham, with Amberley Pastoral Co of Yenda named SunRice Grower of the Year.

Held as part of Rice Connect 2026, the awards recognise excellence, leadership and contribution across the Australian rice industry, bringing together growers, researchers, agronomists, industry partners, processors and advisors from around the country.

In accepting the award alongside his wife, Kate, Chris Morsehead said that his business aims for excellence, not perfection.

"The general recipe in all production systems hasn't varied much since the 1980s, but success often comes from focusing on a few one-percenters, which are often the difference between success and resounding success," Mr Morsehead said.

"Some of the things we have achieved, observed, experienced, and discovered have been nothing short of extraordinary. Our water savings and yields have been phenomenal."

The Shadow Minister for Water and Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, congratulated the Morsehead family and all award recipients recognised through Rice Connect 2026.

"Amberley Pastoral Co represent the very best of an industry that is forever adapting and evolving," Ms Cooke said.

"Their willingness to trial new production systems, partner with leading researchers, and share in the risks of innovation has resulted in significant advances in water efficiency, productivity, and environmental outcomes."

"They are a very deserving recipient of this year's award, and I look forward to seeing how their story inspires others in the industry to collaborate and remain curious about what they can achieve on the farm."

Ms Cooke said the Rice Industry Awards showcased the passion and strength that continues to drive Australian rice growing forward despite mounting challenges, such as

"Every winner recognised has made a meaningful contribution to the success of our rice industry, whether through excellence on-farm, groundbreaking research, industry leadership or service to their local community."

"These awards celebrate the people who are not content to stand still and are constantly looking for better ways to farm, manage water, support their communities and strengthen the future of Australian rice."

"This year’s winners reflect the strength of an industry that continues to set the benchmark for innovation, sustainability and productivity."
