LASTING TRIBUTE UNVEILED TO NARRANDERA COMMUNITY STALWART

The official unveiling of the Wayne "Skinny" Mathieson Oval sign at the Narrandera Showground has provided a lasting tribute to one of the district's most dedicated volunteers.

The newly installed sign recognises the contribution of Wayne "Skinny" Mathieson, whose decades of service to the Narrandera Showground, the Narrandera Show Society, the Narrandera Showground Trust and the Murrumbidgee Sheep Dog Championship Trials helped shape one of the town's most important community assets.

Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, joined the Narrandera Showground Trust, Land Management Committee, members of Skinny’s family, and the wider community to celebrate the official unveiling and acknowledge the enduring legacy that Skinny has left.

"The committee could not have thought of a more respected individual to pay tribute to, and I think it’s important that future generations can see Skinny’s name and understand the contribution he has made," Ms Cooke said.

"The sign is fitting recognition of a man whose hard work and generosity helped make the Narrandera Showground the valued community asset it is today."

Skinny’s involvement with the showground spanned decades and included significant practical improvements to the facilities, as well as leadership in delivering community events that attracted visitors from across the region.

The Narrandera Showground remains a key Crown land asset that supports agricultural shows, sporting activities, cultural events and community gatherings throughout the year.

"Rural showgrounds are a place where annual traditions are celebrated and where whole generations of locals can come together to create memories," Ms Cooke said.

"Investing in Crown land facilities such as the Narrandera Showground helps preserve our history while ensuring these spaces remain vibrant, as well as fit for purpose for years to come.”

“I commend the Narrandera Showground Trust for their tireless efforts to advocate and execute upgrades to the showground precinct, ensuring the facility can serve the needs of the community for decades to come.”

The unveiling ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognise the many volunteers whose ongoing commitment strengthens the Narrandera Showground and ensures it remains an important hub for the wider region.
