​​LONG-SERVING TEMORA FIRE CAPTAIN HANGS UP HELMET​

Long-serving Temora Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Captain Greg Matthews has hung up his helmet for the final time with a special ceremony held honouring his 45 years of service to the local community.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said Captain Matthew’s dedication and service to the community are commendable and congratulated him on his retirement after 45 years of service, 35 of which were spent in charge of the Temora Brigade. 

“Captain Matthews has been a pillar of strength for the Temora community during his career as a firefighter and I want to thank him for his dedication, courage and sacrifice,” Ms Cooke said.

“His legacy will live on in the high standard of service locals have come to know and expect from their local Fire and Rescue station, and for the countless lives he has saved.”

In recognition of his contribution, Captain Matthews has been awarded the National Emergency Medal.

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said Captain Matthews’ commitment to his community has been incredible and is to be commended.

“He has put others before himself, to be a constant and reassuring presence for locals during challenging times and moments of triumph,” Commissioner Baxter said. 

In addition to his service, Captain Matthews is developing a museum to preserve the long history of firefighting in Temora.
