Three remarkable local women have been recognised for their outstanding volunteer contributions, with Fiona Rynehart and Alicia White of Junee, and Jane Wilson of Young named on the 2025 NSW Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.

The Honour Roll was established in 2010 to celebrate the vital role women and girls play in strengthening regional, rural and remote communities across New South Wales through volunteer service.

The three women were nominated by their peers in recognition of their significant volunteer efforts and longstanding commitment to supporting others.

Serving as President for the past two years, Fiona Rynehart played a key role in establishing Junee’s Can Assist branch, helping provide practical and financial support to local people undergoing cancer treatment.

She has also been heavily involved in organising fundraising initiatives, including the Junee Poker Run and Blues Night, which this year raised $30,000 for the charity.

“My mother was involved with the Can Assist branch in Cootamundra, and I’ve proudly carried on that commitment,” Mrs Rynehart said.

“I enjoy giving back to our community because the support we raise stays local and helps people when they need it most.”

As a cancer survivor, Alicia White has channelled her experience into supporting others through her leadership of the Junee Long Lunch, raising thousands of dollars for Can Assist.

Her efforts have helped local cancer patients access assistance with travel, accommodation and treatment costs while raising awareness of the unique challenges faced by those living in regional areas.

“Can Assist supported me and my family throughout my cancer journey in 2020 and 2021, and that support was a genuine uplift during an incredibly difficult time,” Mrs White said.

“I continue volunteering because I know others in our community will face a cancer diagnosis, and I want them to receive the same care and support that I was fortunate enough to receive.”

Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, met with Junee’s honourees on Tuesday to congratulate them on the well-deserved recognition.

“What has stood out to me today is that, despite being recognised for their outstanding individual contributions, Alicia and Fiona have spent their time talking about the importance of the cause rather than their own achievements,” Ms Cooke said.

“Being included on the Honour Roll is a rare and significant recognition, and it is a fitting acknowledgement of everything they have contributed, yet their humility shines through in every conversation.”

“Their commitment is helping to build a stronger and more caring community.”

“I encourage everyone to support Can Assist whenever they can, because you never know when you or someone you love may need that support, and contributions help ensure this remarkable organisation can continue lifting up local people when they need it most.”

Jane Wilson of Young has also been recognised for her years of dedication to wildlife conservation and rescue, supporting the protection and care of native animals across the region.

Through her longstanding involvement with WIRES’ Weddin–Lachlan Branch and Young District Landcare, she has contributed to wildlife rehabilitation, volunteer training and conservation initiatives that benefit local native species.

Nominations for the 2026 NSW Hidden Treasures Honour Roll are now open.
