The rehabilitation of Greenethorpe-Koorawatha Road, a vital throughfare connecting two farming communities and the shires of Weddin and Hilltops, is now complete.
The project received $2.94 million as part of the former NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads Program, along with a $50,000 contribution from Weddin Shire Council.
Upgrades include the installation of guideposts, better drainage, and vegetation management, as well as the construction of table drains, protected headwalls and the replacement of damaged stormwater crossings.
Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke said these works have significantly improved safety along the 7.1km section of road for residents and farmers who depend on the route.
“Roads like this are so important, whether it's for our school kids or whether it's for our farmers who are trying to move agricultural products across the state,” Ms Cooke said.
“This is now a road that can take heavy vehicles much more easily but most importantly, those who take their children to school every day can be assured the road is in the best possible condition.”
“This project has been funded under Round 3 of the Fixing Local Roads Program, a program of the former Coalition Government who truly understood the needs of rural communities and their councils.”
“I'm very pleased to have played a key role in the advocacy for this program, for this project in particular.”
Weddin Shire Mayor, Cr Paul Best said the project had been a priority of the local council for some time, as previous conditions along Greenethorpe-Koorawatha Road had begun to comprise the safety of its users.
“With the road now widened and strengthened, we've significantly improved its safety, and we've created a good area of accessibility for heavy vehicles, which is crucial during our harvest seasons,” Mr Best said.
“Agriculture is a real backbone of our community, and this sort of quality infrastructure keeps the ag industry moving and keeps our communities connected.”
