Two new pedestrian bridges have opened at Temora’s Lake Century, marking the completion of enhancement works and safety upgrades at one of the region’s most beloved landmarks.
Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke was joined by the Hon. Stephen Lawrence MLC, Mayor of Temora Shire Council Rick Firman OAM, fellow Temora Shire Councilors', members of the Lake Centenary Committee, local tradespeople, and members of the community at the official opening on Friday afternoon.
The project received $118,449 in funding through the NSW Government’s Places to Swim grant program, with an additional $40,000 contribution from Temora Shire Council, further demonstrating a strong commitment to community infrastructure and local partnerships.
Speaking at the event, Ms Cooke acknowledged the significance of the bridges for both locals and visitors.
"Lake Centenary is a treasured space for the Temora community, a place where families gather, where fitness and nature go hand-in-hand, and where we celebrate the best of what regional NSW has to offer," said Ms Cooke.
"The installation of these pedestrian bridges will enhance safety, improve accessibility, and support the growing number of people who use this area for walking, running, and water recreation.”
“It’s wonderful to see the result of what happens when government, council, and community work together.”
Ms Cooke also paid tribute to the contributions of local trades, the Lake Centenary Committee, and Temora Shire Council’s town planner Claire Golder whose dedication helped bring the vision to life.
"This project is a testament to what can be achieved through strong community spirit and collaborative planning. I want to thank the Lake Centenary Committee and all the local tradespeople involved, your craftsmanship and commitment are clear in every step of this beautiful new infrastructure," said Ms Cooke.
"As the home of the V8 Superboats, Lake Centenary brings thousands of visitors to our region and showcases Temora on the national stage.”
This new infrastructure ensures that spectators and families can safely enjoy all the lake has to offer, from everyday recreation to major events," she said.
Chair of the Lake Centenary Management Committee, Simon Forsyth said it was a privilege to unveil what many have been working against the elements to deliver.
“What we’re opening is not only good for the community but certainty for the lake and lake users,” Mr Forsyth said.
The day’s celebrations included a plaque unveiling ceremony, community walk across the new bridges, and reflections from community leaders on the importance of continued investment in public recreational assets.
Temora Shire Mayor, Rick Firman described the day as a significant moment for the local community.
“This is a facility that we are very proud of as a council, and I know that these bridges will be utilised for many generations to come.”
