Kate Cleary, a former social worker and founder of The Farm in Galong, has been named the 2024 NSW Volunteer of the Year. The Farm is a rehabilitation centre providing vital support to women facing addiction, family violence, and other significant challenges.
Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, who nominated Kate for the award, praised her for her extraordinary vision and dedication.
“Having nominated Kate for this award, I am absolutely thrilled to see her extraordinary efforts recognised at this level,” Ms Cooke said.
"I’ve had the privilege of visiting The Farm on several occasions and witnessing firsthand the profound impact Kate and her dedicated team are making. Their work is transforming lives, creating opportunities for recovery, and fostering hope for women and their families.”
“Kate’s vision was not just to establish a rehabilitation centre but to create a safe haven for women seeking peace, healing, and hope,” Ms Cooke said.
“Her unwavering commitment to supporting women impacted by trauma and helping them rebuild their lives is truly exceptional.”
Through her career as a social worker, Kate witnessed firsthand the complex needs of women experiencing severe hardship, particularly those affected by interpersonal trauma and the removal of their children. She didn’t just offer support from a distance but lived alongside these women, providing care, understanding, and a pathway to recovery.
Over many years, Kate’s voluntary work has made a profound and positive impact, not only on the women she supports but also on their children and extended families.
The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, hosted annually by The Centre for Volunteering, celebrate the extraordinary contributions of volunteers across the state. This prestigious award recognises individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication and create lasting, positive change in their communities.
Kate’s work at The Farm in Galong exemplifies this ethos. A not-for-profit, accredited rehabilitation centre, The Farm helps women recover from alcohol and drug misuse. Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers like Kate, The Farm continues to provide essential services, transforming lives and strengthening communities.
Kate Cleary’s recognition as the 2024 NSW Volunteer of the Year is a testament to her incredible impact and the enduring legacy of her vision and compassion.
