Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has announced $100,000 has been secured for Temora Shire Council for projects aimed at supporting active transport options for the local community.
Ms Cooke said the funding – part of the government’s Get NSW Active program – will be divided equally between two projects, both designed to promote walking and bike riding as a safe and convenient way to get about.
$50,000 will go towards improving pedestrian access and parking at Temora High School, while a further $50,000 will be invested in the construction of a 125-metre footpath connecting Anzac Street to Bowling Club Lane.
“This particular program is extremely popular, with hundreds of councils applying for a share in the funding, so I’m very pleased to see that Temora Shire Council has been selected as one of the successful recipients,” Ms Cooke said.
“I am in regular contact with the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, and never miss an opportunity to advocate on behalf of our communities for funding to ensure our transport needs – whether it be improved roads and bridges, or enhanced walking and cycleways – are not overlooked.
“Ensuring we have the infrastructure in place that supports active transport options for people who would like to walk, cycle, or scoot their way to work or school, is an important piece of the transport connectivity puzzle,” she said.
Temora Shire Council Mayor Rick Firman said improved walkways help promote healthy lifestyles for residents, while enhancing the amenity of the shire.
“Locals and visitors alike benefit from projects like this, and I’m grateful to Steph Cooke for her ongoing advocacy to ensure the government never loses sight of the needs of our rural and regional towns and villages,” Mr Firman said.
“I’d like to also thank the Regional Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison for recognising the many health benefits that come with ensuring we have the infrastructure in place that fosters and promotes active lifestyles for residents of all ages, and of course for the visitors that spend time in the Temora Shire,” he said.
