Farmers are being reminded that support is available after drought was declared in the Eastern Riverina.
The latest forecast figures from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have revealed that a large part of the Cootamundra electorate is currently in drought.
Cootamundra Gundagai is the most drought impacted Local Government Area in New South Wales with 71 per cent of the region in drought, with the other 29 per cent categorised as drought affected.
While local producers wait for a late break in the weather, Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke is reminding those impacted that her office is here to help.
“Our farmers are smart and resilient, we saw that in 2019,” Ms Cooke said.
“But there’s no denying that in recent years, producers have been faced with worsening economic pressures, workforce shortages, and regulatory challenges.”
“That’s why I’m encouraging anyone who may need support to know what services and programs are available to them.”
Farmers can visit www.droughthub.nsw.gov.au for advice on how to prepare for and manage drought, as well as information on what financial assistance is currently available.
Landowners are encouraged to download the NSWDPI Farm Tracker™ app, which will enable them to monitor seasonal conditions on their property.
The Rural Adversity Mental Health Program and Rural Aid are also available for those who require counselling or mental health support.
“I also encourage farmers to call, email or write to my office and let me know how I can best support you through this challenging time,” Ms Cooke said.
