NEW CHANGEROOMS OPEN DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SPORT

Wednesday, 31 July 2024

Ensuring women and girls have every opportunity to excel in sport has received a boost in Junee with the opening of the new female changerooms at Loftus Oval, Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said.

On hand for the unveiling, Ms Cooke said the new amenities have been made possible thanks to a $346,425 investment by the previous NSW Coalition Government, along with a $20,000 investment by the Junee Junior Rugby League Club, together with the generosity of local tradespeople who were determined to make the project a reality for the community.

“The opening of the changerooms reflects a commitment to supporting women and girls in sport; creating an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to excel,” Ms Cooke said.

“Making sure our communities have access to sporting grounds and amenities that encourage engagement and foster emerging talent is something I’ve long been passionate about, and the new female changerooms at Loftus Oval are the perfect example of this.

“As the entire nation gets behind our Aussie athletes competing at the Paris Olympics – including those we’re proud to say grew up in our Cootamundra electorate – the opening of the new facilities in Junee reminds us that to reach that level of excellence, each and every member of our Olympic team had to start at a grassroots level.

“Which is why it’s just so vitally important for the government to invest in regional sporting infrastructure, to ensure that everyone – including women and girls – has the chance to participate in sport, and for the gifted athletes among us, the chance to thrive.

“Congratulations to all those who helped bring this project in Junee to life, including Junee Junior Rugby League President Damien Field, Vice President Mitch Sweeney, and everyone – all the mums, dads, and carers – who turn up each and every week to support junior sport right across the region,” she said.

Ms Cooke said the previous NSW Coalition Government invested heavily in regional sporting grounds and amenities, especially those aimed at improving accessibility for women and girls.

“These facilities at Loftus Oval will not only improve the sporting experience for our young athletes, but will also encourage more girls to participate in sports,” Ms Cooke said.
