A 2.7-million-dollar upgrade of Cootamundra’s heritage-listed fire station is officially complete.

This monumental project aimed to preserve the station’s 112-year-old façade while providing Cootamundra’s Fire and Rescue brigade with the facilities and resources they need to keep the community safe and attract new members.

Upgrades include a new engine bay to improve access for fire trucks, additional storage space, new staff amenities and new facilities to help with clean-up after a hazardous waste incident.

The station’s official reopening took place on Wednesday, with Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell, and Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, among those in attendance.

“This fire station has served the Cootamundra community and surrounds for more than one hundred years,” Ms Cooke said.

“I must give credit to all involved in this important project, seeing how carefully the station’s heritage has been preserved while giving our frontline emergency responders the facilities they require.

“Our first responders deserve the very best resources and facilities to ensure they can keep our communities safe when an emergency or disaster strikes.”

Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said that the organisation is proud to deliver a modernised station for the local fire brigade.

“Cootamundra’s firefighters were consulted to shape the design, ensuring the station works for those using it every day,” Commissioner Fewtrell said.

“With their input we’ve delivered a workplace supporting their health, safety and operational effectiveness.”

Cootamundra’s fire station history dates back to 1882 when locals formed a volunteer brigade in response to a fire at the milliner’ shop.

The station on Adam’s Street officially opened in 1914, after the Board of Fire Commissioners of NSW took control of many of the state’s regional brigades.
