Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, joined Weddin Shire residents on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan to commemorate the Victory in the Pacific and Vietnam Veterans Day.

The service marked the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Pacific, which brought an end to the Second World War for Australia, and paid tribute to those who served in the Vietnam War, acknowledging the sacrifices made by veterans, their families, and their communities.

Ms Cooke, who delivered a commemorative address, said the occasion was a moving reminder of the impact global conflicts had on regional communities and the importance of remembering those who served during periods of war.

“It was an honour to stand alongside the Grenfell community in remembrance,” Ms Cooke said.

“These services ensure we never forget the courage of those who served, or the resilience of the families and communities who supported them back home.

“From the hardships of the Second World War to the sacrifices of Vietnam, we continue to carry their stories and honour their service.”

The commemorative service took place at the Grenfell Cenotaph, with veterans, community groups, and local schools participating in the ceremony.

President of the Grenfell RSL Sub-Branch, Glen Ivin, emphasised the importance of communities coming together and honouring those who served in WWII and Vietnam.

“Each day we gather to commemorate our military history is significant because it shows our veterans and their families that Australia deeply values their service,” Mr Ivin said.

“It’s also a chance for our community to come together and pass on these stories that shaped our country to the next generation.”
