WINS FOR WEST WYALONG FROM RESOURCES FOR REGIONS

West Wyalong’s sport and recreation will be transformed thanks to five new projects from the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions round seven.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke met with the community groups behind all five projects, who are sharing in $2,095,172.

The successful projects include:

·       West Wyalong Aerodrome Upgrade, $606,173 - which will include installing 6500 metres

of wildlife exclusion fencing and three gateways, and installing a fuel depot to

encourage increased commercial and recreational aviation in West Wyalong and the

Bland Shire.

·      West Wyalong Recreation Ground upgrade, $485,000 - the Resurfacing of four netball

courts at the Park Street Recreation Ground, renovation of the cricket nets, sports

lighting upgrade and fencing.

·      Cooinda Waters Canoe Circuit, $350,000 - The extension of the Cooinda Reserve canoe

circuit and deepening and widening of the existing channel to create an accessible and

functional water recreation space for the benefit of local residents and visitors.

·       West Wyalong Harness Racing Club Refurbishment, $354,763 - The transformation and

revitalisation of the West Wyalong Harness Racing Club's facilities to attract additional

race meetings, competitors and visitors and provide a first class regional sporting

facility.

·       West Wyalong Golf Course Rejuvenation and Sustainability Project, $299,236 - Drought

proofing the West Wyalong golf course and adjacent bowling greens by extending two

dams, reconfiguration of the irrigation system and restoration of the damaged tee boxes

and greens with drought tolerant grass.

“It’s been wonderful to meet with council and some of the individuals behind these deserving projects, which are all looking to grow investment and interest in the West Wyalong community and Bland Shire,” Ms Cooke said.

“This is a fantastic community that deserves this investment from the Resources for Regions program.”

Amanda Stitt from the Cooinda Waters project said she was delighted they had been successful in securing funding.

“It’s just amazing that we have received this funding, it’s going to be a boost for people from all walks of life,” Ms Stitt said.

“At the moment you have to be able-bodied to use the course, but once we have the launch ramp it will improve access for everyone.”

Business owner Gail Platz from the West Wyalong Yacht Club said the projects will be a boost for the community.

“I’m a motel owner and this is something extra I can recommend for people and get them to spend a bit more time in town,” Ms Platz said.

Resources for Regions round seven is part of the $2 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to support growing regional centres, activate local economies and improve services and community infrastructure for regional communities.

The NSW 2020/21 Budget announced a further $75 million will be available for new projects through Resources for Regions round eight in 2021.
