Barellan’s new sewerage system is now connected to 90% of homes in the village, marking a major milestone for the community.

Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, recently inspected the state-of-the-art pump station and evaporation ponds that have delivered modern sewerage services to Barellan for the first time.

“After the 2016 floods, when septic systems across the village were inundated, it became clear that the community deserved better" Ms Cooke said.

“The former NSW Government stepped up with a $4.7 million grant under the Safe and Secure Water Program, and Narrandera Shire Council funded a further $3.2 million. Today, we’re seeing the results of that collaboration, with 160 Barellan homes and businesses now connected to the village’s first-ever sewerage scheme.”

The innovative system uses smaller pump stations to transport sewage to the main pump station on Bendee Street, where it is directed to new evaporation ponds located 3 kilometres north of the village. A further 20 homes are expected to be connected in the coming months, with the project’s full completion scheduled for March.

Designed with capacity for future expansion, the system can accommodate all unallocated plots in the village, enabling a total of 400 connections and paving the way for Barellan’s continued development.

“This project is a game-changer for Barellan, it not only improves local infrastructure but also supports the community’s growth and resilience for the future.”

Narrandera Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Kschenka, joined Ms Cooke to tour the new facilities.

“This new sewerage system is a vital step in improving public health and supporting Barellan’s growth. With this infrastructure in place, our community is better prepared for the future and the opportunities ahead.” Cr Kschenka said.
