Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has today announced $7250 will be allocated to organisations across the electorate to help celebrate NAIDOC Week in 2018.

Ms Cooke was pleased to inform the following organisations that they were successful in their application for the NSW Government’s NAIDOC Week Grants:

  • Yalbillinga Boori Day Care Centre Aboriginal Corporation Cowra - $2000

  • Young Mobile Play Activities - $1500

  • Weigelli Centre Aboriginal Corporation Woodstock - $1000

  • Cootamundra Health Care Co-op Limited - $750

  • Cowra Information and Neighbourhood Centre Inc - $2000

The organisations proposed a rich variety of cultural and social activities, including smoking ceremonies, traditional painting, didgeridoo performances and a community march in their successful applications.

“NAIDOC Week is an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the tremendous achievements of our Indigenous people here in Cootamundra,” Ms Cooke said.

“The Wiradjuri Nation is the largest in the state and I look forward to seeing it celebrated and shared during NAIDOC Week.

“I’m particularly excited to see this year’s theme ‘Because of her, we can!’ foregrounding the Cootamundra electorate’s strong Indigenous women.”

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell said more than 120 grants have been awarded for NAIDOC Week 2018, which runs from July 8 to 15.

“The NSW Government is proud to support the recognition and celebration of Aboriginal women under the NAIDOC Week theme for 2018 and we are committed to continually recognise the contribution and achievements of Aboriginal communities right across the state,” Ms Mitchell said.
