Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke MP today congratulated Detective Inspector Scott Wilkinson on his appointment as Officer in Charge for Young in the Hume Police District.

Hume Police District Commander Superintendent Chris Schilt announced Detective Inspector Wilkinson’s appointment, which forms part of the NSW Police re-engineering program.

“I’m very pleased that Detective Inspector Wilkinson has been appointed to this role,” Ms Cooke said. “I have every confidence that he will bring great experience, understanding and compassion to the role.

“Immediately after the by-election I met with Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys APM and have met with him and Assistant Commissioner Peter Barrie and Superintendent Noble to consistently communicate the community’s strong expectations around more front-line police in our communities and a more proactive approach to policing that engages people in our town and villages, and I’m pleased to be delivering so soon after the promises I made to the Cootamundra electorate during the by-election,” she said.

“The new Officer in Charge model will emphasise proactive policing at a community level and I am confident Detective Inspector Wilkinson will help realise the full potential of that approach.

“This is the biggest change to policing in rural communities in 20 years, and it really means we now have a model that will work for small communities,” Ms Cooke said. “Detective Inspector Wilkinson will play a key role in the operation of that model in Young.”

Superintendent Schilt highlighted the attributes that gained Detective Inspector Wilkinson the role.

“He is certainly an experienced officer with a detective background,” he said. “He’s been involved in some big investigations.

“His wealth of experience will be a real benefit to the community. He’s been serving as the crime manager in Young so he has a good understanding of the area already. Detective Inspector Wilkinson is really going to be the face of Young from a policing perspective and he will be heavily involved in a lot of community activities that the police are involved in.”

The news comes as the former Officer in Charge of Young Police Station Inspector Ashley Holmes achieves the role of Chief Inspector which means he will take on a pivotal role in the management of the Hume Police District in proactively engaging with the community to make our community safer.

“Inspector Holmes has been leading the day-to-day operations of the area which extended from Young up to Greenethorpe, Grenfell and Caragabal for the past seven years – and we are looking forward to having him in this senior role to help grow the relationships he has already developed and to ensure we are making stronger connections across the command.”

Superintendent Schilt said he was every excited about the role Chief Inspector Holmes will be playing and is looking forward to having him as part of his leadership team.
